Martin Brodin is the owner and founder of Sweden’s renowned deep-house
label, Deeplay Music. He is the man who discovered such great talents like
Physics and Dalminjo. Martin also runs Yellhouse Records, a label that
showcases the big room and funky house vibe of from the likes of Håkan
Lidbo, Playmaker and Sugar Caine. The launch of the sub label Deeplay Soultec
in 2005, leads Deeplay into the edgy and techier realm, while still retaining
the foundational element of soul. Martin is always open to new ideas and
sounds, which is often reflected in his talent as a DJ and producer.
His serious interest in music started during the 1980's, a decade in which
he grooved to the sounds of Yello, Depeche Mode and Kraftwerk. In the early
1990's, Martin once again found himself at the forefront of the emerging
dance music scene. He became instantly hooked on this genre when he heard
the Lil Louis club classic, "French Kiss." Buying and collecting
dance music records became Martin’s number one love and hobby. Martin
went on to run the most influential record store in Malmoe, credited with
bringing House and Dance music to the region for the very first time. After
a six year run the store was closed to the dismay of scores of DJ’s
and music lovers who considered it a musical institution. Currently, he
listens to all kinds of music, this open-mindedness helped develop his
unique “music-ear” as he has no musical boundaries.
His deejay sets encompasses different styles and moods. Martin often tailors
his set to fit a specific audience. He thinks of himself as an eclectic
dj that is not afraid of experimenting with new sounds and musical ideas.
Martin’s versatile sets have raised his profile internationally,
spinning at some of the most prestigious venues around the globe. Martin’s
recent sets all over his native Sweden, Dubai, London (for Ben Watt), Bremen,
Copenhagen and Tokyo (on a recent Deeplay tour), have top promoters taking
notice.
Martin’s first single “Semitone Shuffle” released on
Deeplay Soultec, has fetched great feedback from the likes of Laurent Garnier
(F-Com), James Holden (Border), Kenny Hawkes, Dave Mothersole (Kiss 100)
and Mattias Tanzmann (Moon Harbor) among many others. In November 2005
Martin released his first mixed CD compilation “Soultec Selected
vol 1. The mixture of quality old and new house cuts was called by many
a true club experience. Martin recorded the project the good old fashion
way…two turntables and a mixer. The vibe captured on the disc earned
Martin massive accolades that include a perfect 5/5 rating in respected
U.K. industry publication IDJ. 2006 was Martin Broden’s biggest year
to date. He mixed a disc for the internationally known “Bargrooves
Black” mixed cd series with mainstay Ben Sawton for Seamless Recordings.
Martin also remixed one of his childhood influences Newcleus, reworking
the Electro classic “Destination Earth”. Despite his heavy
remix and production schedule, Martin plans on launching two more labels;
Audiobahn and Just For Fun Recordings in early 2007. As an entrepreneur,
a DJ, and a producer Martin Brodin will continue to make major contributions
and be at the very forefront of an ever-changing international music scene.
